Its official, we are reaching the toddler years! On December 7, andieanderin will turn 2 years old! It was November 7 when we launched our kickstarter campaign to help us crowdfund the remaining money we needed to get our first collection of seven neckties through production.
Our campaign successfully closed on December 7, 2017. We launched our public website and we celebrated with our closest family and friends with a launch party at Robert Leonard Salon in Seattle.
2018, or year one, was a whirlwind and 2019 (year two) was ...well...a whirlwind :)
But whirlwind in its best form - 2019 was a pretty great year and we have a lot of amazing memories from just this year alone. To wrap up 2019 and our second year in necktie business, we have gathered a list of our 20 greatest highlights from the year! These are in no particular order, but there is probably good reason that #2 and #3 were top of mind when putting together the list ;)
We have so many more neckties we want to design and so many more people we want to reach. Lots of excitement for 2020, our third year.....including the possibility of celebrating our first woman president!
We thank all of you for your incredible support and hope you have an amazing holiday season!
Cara and Lisa
("Andie" and "Erin")
1. One for Women Podcast Interview
This was a first for us. Recording a podcast sounded scary and amazing, but it was certainly a huge highlight of the year. Meg from One for Women interviewed us while we were all remote: Meg in Boston, Lisa in New York, and Cara in Seattle. We couldn't be happier with the outcome and are so thankful that Meg was the one leading our first podcast interview. AND, the recording is on Spotify! We feel like rockstars! Check it out on Spotify or through the One for Women website.
2. Brandi Carlile wearing our Frida inspired necktie on stage!!
Well, not sure it gets much better than this! THE Brandi Carlile...the woman leading the band that won 3 Grammys in 2019 and rocked this performance....wore our Mexican Icon, Frida inspired necktie while performing onstage at Oak Mountain Amphitheater. Thankfully Josh Weichman was in the crowd and snapped some amazing photos. Brandi Carlile is an inspiration of ours for her incredible talent and mind...not to mention her awesome necktie style. We will forever be grateful our necktie made its way to her hands.
3. Ruth Bader Ginsburg HANDWRITTEN thank you card
Another one of those pinch me moments. We gifted Ruth Bader Ginsburg our Justice for All necktie that is inspired by Notorious RBG herself. It was her 86th birthday - we had no expectations and wasn't even sure if it would make its way to her. We were OVER THE MOON when we received a handwritten thank you card from her in the mail. You better believe it went right into a frame and high on a shelf so no kid's hands touched it :) RBG is one of those incredible individuals that we feel so honored to have a momento from.
4. Cara on TV for National Bowtie Day!
Our co-founder Cara was lucky enough to be on television with New Day Northwest for the neckwear holiday along with her daughter Lucy and our good friend and longtime supporter, Chelsea as the models.
5. Being written up in a number of publications, including New York Magazine
Anytime we receive media coverage, we do a little happy dance. It is an incredible feeling to have your products be highlighted in this way. And it was an extra special honor to hear our One of a Kind necktie inspired by Iris Apfel was submitted by a friend and supporter, @jenee.sais.quoi for a Mother’s Day gift guide in New York Magazine.
6. Hosting 4 photoshoots with 15 friends as models
Our photoshoots are a labor of love. This year, we purchased a camera from a friend and planned and executed two photoshoots in the Spring and two in the Fall. Our models are all friends, family, women we have met through small business, and others we have met through instagram. All of these women have volunteered their time to participate in our shoots and have created some stunning photos. As an online retailer, the photos are everything and we can’t say thank you enough to the 15(!) women that participated in our photoshoots this year!
7. Celebrated an extra special International Women's Day
March 2019 was a special month and International Women’s Day on March 8 was extra special. In coordination with Sydney Mintle from Gossip and Glamour, co-founder Cara hosted a brunch with a number of creative women in Seattle, while the other co-founder Lisa attended an International Women’s Day event focused on women networking in New York City, but the most amazing part of the day was the outpouring of women wearing their power neckties and sharing on instagram. Including fashion educator Kimberly Jenkins wearing the ‘Women That Add Up’ necktie onstage at SXSW!! You can see a collection of all the photos on our blog here.
8. Designing our first custom necktie
When we got a request to design a custom necktie for a customer’s special event, we were thrilled! The design was inspired by Anne Lister, which meant we got to do research like watching “Gentleman Jack” :). This was a pretty special for us and we were honored to be given the opportunity. It is currently not an official offering of andieanderin, but if you have a custom necktie request, we will do our best to accommodate. You can email firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire.
9. One national interview that we are still awaiting the release :)
We will certainly be making a splash once this interview goes live! Fingers crossed it happens soon! We did an interview with @godaddy for their ‘Make Your Own Way’ campaign in which they are telling the stories of entrepreneurs and small business owners around the world. Our interview was part of their yet-to-be-released Seattle series. If you have some time, you should check out their instagram to see all of the amazing stories they have already published. This was also the first time we had professional photos taken of us! Probably why you have seen this photo everywhere :)
10. Co-hosting 2 women-led pop up markets in NYC
Gal Pals Unite NYC! We teamed up with 10+ women-owned brands for a weekend long pop up - twice! Once in Spring 2019 in the lower east side of New York City and because it was so successful, we did it again in late Summer. These pop ups have been so rewarding and fun. We have met some awesome women business owners and brands and been able to craft a boutique pop up experience that we love. Be on the lookout for another Gal Pals Unite in 2020!
11. Our neckties featured in their first professional fashion shoot
Thanks to 425 Magazine, our neckties took part in their first professional fashion shoot for a publication AND TO OUR SURPRISE, when we got the magazine in the mail, it was a gorgeous male model wearing the Dolly Parton, Malala Yousafzai, and Michelle Obama inspired neckties. We LOVE these pictures and hope to photograph more men in the neckties.
Styling: @ShelbyRoweMoyer and @zoe.branch
Model: @marcelluswilliams @tcmmodels
Location: Marco Polo Motel in Seattle
12. Started to network with talented women that we hope to produce product with in 2020
We have been lucky to connect and start work with some amazing artists this year. We hope to bring some collaborative projects to life in 2020. More to come!
13. Hosted our second annual Power Women Happy Hour in Seattle
For our second year, we hosted a summer happy hour in Seattle where we gather old and new friends. We will take any excuse to get some awesome women together! Always a great time!
14. Saw bows EVERYWHERE on red carpets
The pussy bow is having a moment this year and WE ARE HERE FOR IT! Bows have been on every major red carpet this past year. We even dedicated a whole blog post to the number of bows on the Met Gala pink carpet, including this look from Lady Gaga. If there are any stylists looking for a statement bow inspired by an influential woman for an upcoming event, you know who to call ;)
15. Introduced 2 new necktie styles
Our ‘Justice for All’ necktie inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been a favorite since we introduced her in March. She was a fun one to design because we could play more with the look of RBG’s infamous collars. We then brought back a redesigned Mother Teresa inspired necktie, which coincidentally also happens to be a shorter necktie. We are excited to celebrate new women and introduce new neckties to the store next year! If there is an influential woman that you want to see us design a necktie after, please submit her name here or reach out directly through instagram.
16. Passed 1000 followers on instagram
Okay okay, it might not be the biggest accomplish to many, but we were STOKED to reach 4 digits :)
17. Fashion Articles Spotlighting Statement Neckwear
This headline is everything and there were others just like it this past year. Including Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi making a splash with her scarf neckwear. *raising hand* we make statement neckwear!
18. Saw Lizzo perform live :)
Ok, ok.....not exactly tied to andieanderin, but we both saw Lizzo on different occasions and I think we can all agree, she is a trailblazer worth celebrating. Also, want to make sure you are still with us....this is a long list!
19. Despite living on opposite ends of the country, we came together 5 times throughout the year
We are two lucky ladies. Co-founders, Lisa resides in Brooklyn and Cara in Seattle. We are friends who get to work and learn together. We are committed to growing andieanderin and are so incredibly thankful for the support we have received.
20. Created a Style Guide and Necktie Dressing Room App
We get questions often on how to style the neckties or what outfits to wear them with. We love to talk styling options and started a Style Guide on our website to include step-by-step tutorials. We plan to build on these tutorials and continue doing videos on instagram. We also introduced the necktie dressing room where you can snap a photo of yourself and using instagram, can try a digital necktie on.
Thank you for reminiscing with us and making it through andieanderin’s top 20 highlights from 2019.
If you are in Seattle, we will be participating in a Sip and Shop pop up at The Nest in Thompson Hotel from 11-3 pm. We would love for you to join us in toasting to an amazing first two years in business and for many more things to come! Event is complimentary, but restricted to 21+.
