Women's Suffrage Pussy Bow Necktie

Women's Suffrage Pussy Bow Necktie

Women's Suffrage Pussy Bow Necktie

$48.00

This option is currently sold out.

The Women's Suffrage necktie is inspired by the centennial of the 19th amendment and 55 years since the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These milestones also happen to be taking place the same year a record number of female candidates entered the presidential race and the first women of color is on the ballot for Vice President.

The 19th Amendment was certified on August 26, 1920 - the date that is now celebrated as Women’s Equality Day. While the 19th Amendment was monumental in that it eliminated sex as a barrier to voting in the United States, it left inequalities of class and race. The Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed by Lyndon B. Johnson with Martin Luther King Jr. by his side, officially prohibited racial discrimination in voting.

“In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing: anti-humanism.” - Shirley Chisholm

Behind the Design
We are honored to have a sketch by @amber_vittoria, titled “Resident Loud Person” bring life to the necktie. She says the sketch is inspired by Taylor Swift’s Woman of the Decade Award speech - specifically her line about being a resident loud person, and how when we stand up for what we believe in, we can create change.

The sketch was further customized to include yellow flowers, which was symbolic of showing support for the suffrage movement in the early 1900's. In 1920, Tennessee was poised to either be the needed 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment or to reject ratification and ensure the fight continued. Both sides wore rose-shaped pins to indicate which side of the battle they were on: suffragists wore yellow roses, and anti-suffragists wore red roses.

The design is then topped off with the slogan, Votes for Women!
