The Grand Slammers necktie is designed to stand out from the crowd. With a bold chartreuse silk similar to a tennis ball and a netted white organza resembling a racket, this necktie is fit for a tennis queen. That is because this design is inspired by tennis legends, Serena Williams and Althea Gibson.
There aren’t many people that can be called G.O.A.T - Greatest of All Time, but then again, Serena Williams is not like many people. She holds the most Grand Slam single titles of all time amongst both women and men, is a multi-Olympic gold medalist, named Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Decade by prominent publications, a fashion designer for her own label, and most recently, a mom; Serena Williams is hands-down the G.O.A.T. Since entering the game, Serena has done wonders for popularizing the sport of tennis, but it was another female tennis player that first opened the doors. The late Althea Gibson clinched the title of the first African American woman to win a Grand Slam with her French Open win in 1956. Often compared for their aggressive approach to the game, Serena and Althea both grew up with little, in neighborhoods that don’t traditionally produce professional tennis players. Serena is from Compton, CA and Althea from Harlem, NY.
There is no denying that the sport of tennis is better off because of players like Serena Williams and Althea Gibson. After a Wimbledon match in 2016, Williams was asked in a press conference what she thought about being called “one of the greatest female athletes of all time.” Her response: “I prefer… ‘one of the greatest athletes of all time.’” We think Althea would have agreed with this statement.
