When you are the first, you want more than anything to not be last, especially when it means you are the first woman in US history to hold office as high as the Vice Presidency. Not only is Kamala the first woman, she is the first Black and South-Asian person to hold this title in national office. A symbolic victory for all women.

While her initial bid was for the 2020 Democratic Presidency; Kamala became well known for her tenacity politically and her values. A high profile candidate, she was also first in other areas of her career. Kamala was the first Black Attorney General in the state of California as well as the first woman to hold the job, and as a U.S. Senator, she was the first woman of South-Asian heritage to do so. Talk about a true trailblazer!

Born in Oakland, California to immigrant parents, her mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan named her Kamala, which means “lotus” in Sanskrit. Her mother wanted Kamala to preserve her cultural identity. Growing up, Kamala has noted that her mother, who raised her and her sister, adopted and raised them in black culture, while also embracing their Indian heritage, and living life proudly as an American.  

Her parents were very well educated. Her father is from Jamaica and was a professor at Stanford University. While her late mother, Dr. Gopalan, the daughter of an Indian diplomat, was a cancer researcher. Kamala followed suit in seeking higher education, studying political science at Howard University and obtaining her law degree from Hastings College.

Kamala Harris has become an icon, having a notable career before being elected as the 49th Vice President of the United States, her practical choice of footwear, and her power to break glass ceilings, while also being able to break ties in the senate.
